Improvement Project to Ease Access on Al Awir Road

After long-standing complaints by residents in international city and connected Al Awir road, more than Dhs 190 m is to be spent on improving the roads. The Roads and Transport Authority has approved a contract for improving Al Awir Road and entrances to International City Project, at a cost of Dhs191 m. The project is in partnership with Nakheel, the manufacturer of International City.





Presently there is an only one entrance used by residents of the International City and visitors to Dragon Mart, which results in jammed pack crowd during the morning and evening times. From last few years, RTA provided an extra signalised entry/exit point at Al Manama Road that has relieved the traffic flow at the main access.
This upgrade project will cover Al Awir Road, Nouakchott Road and the International City at Al Warsan, would increase the intake of roads network, and relieve the flow of traffic within the International City. The project contains improving Al Awir Road in a sector expanding from the crossing of the Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road to the International City roundabout. A 2 lane flyover will be manufactured at the point of Nouakchott and Al Awir Roads to secure a free traffic movement for the traffic inbound from Nouakchott Road and outbound to Al Awir Road westward.

It will also give a turning point for motorists whose coming from Al Awir Road to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road. The manufacture of a service road in both directions of Al Awir Road is also planned to secure smooth traffic from International City, Dragon Mart and Al Warqaa. Bridge between Al Warqaa and the International City, which is for pedestrian and cycling; is also on the cards and will offer entrance to Dragon Mart and the Fruits & Vegetables Market.
The obtaining main 4 roundabouts in International City will be turned into signalized junctions, and the present lane would be widened by adding 1 or 2 lanes in specific sectors. The project also bounds the widening of Nouakchott Road in both directions from 1 to 2 lanes, and adding modifications of junctions along Nouakchott Road. A signalized junction will be additional to provide entry to the International City, besides turning the existing Treatment Plant roundabout into a junction; providing a turn to the Treatment Plant.
